Alfred Frederic KIDD

We were on January 13, 1901.

After a restless night, the English steamer "Kaïssari", bound for Mauritius (Port Louis) arrived at the North Point of the Cascades between Sainte Rose and Saint Philippe.

Due to bad weather, due to the cyclone, the steamer's rudder was broken, causing the boat to drift, before crashing violently on the coast of the island.

The toll was very heavy: 52 people saved, 23 dead includingchief engineer Alfred Frédéric KIDDwho gave his life to save part of the crew. He rests in the small cemetery of Saint Rose. The epitaph sits on a metal heart.

The next morning, the Maritime Registrar and the British Consulate Reunion took the train to survey the damage and note what needed to be done.

It was one of the most terrible shipwrecks on the northern tip of the Cascades.
